The history of Brentwood Woman's Club is rich and diverse. What began in 1972 as a handful of Brentwood women, selling Tupperware for their first fundraiser, has evolved into a nationally recognized, award winning organization of fifty members.

Brentwood Woman's Club (BWC) became a charter member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1973 with about forty members. The goal, at that time, was to provide educational enrichment through the support of the Brentwood High School library and the Brentwood Public Library. BWC members were able to fund their philanthropic interests with money raised through bake sales, arts and crafts sales, luncheons, and Teddy Bear Picnics.

The strong tradition of supporting education remains today, and BWC's continued growth has enabled the club to broaden its scope to include many other important causes. For many years, our main financial support has been designated to high school senior girls with funds toward college scholarships. Additionally, BWC has provided sponsorships each year for two high school sophomores to attend the Tennessee Leadership Conference (formerly the Hugh O'Brien Leadership conference). A poetry contest offered to elementary through high school students is sponsored, with recognition at the local and state levels at a reception hosted by BWC. Book donations are made to the winners' school libraries.

Other charities supported by our volunteer members are: Snoopy's Closet at Williamson Medical Center which clothes needy newborns, Ronald McDonald House with food or other needed items, Hospital Hospitality House with monetary donations, Vanderbilt Burn Center with holiday decorating, Bingo at Harpeth Terrace Convalescent Center, BRIDGES (a domestic violence shelter) receives donations, Camp Hope receives tuition for two children, Williamson County Literacy Council receives donations, Operation Smile is supported through hospital gown sewing projects and donations, and many other organizations are also funded.

There is a long tradition of selfless dedication of club members with many hours of volunteer service to the community of Brentwood and Williamson county. In the beginning, some of our community projects included construction of River Park at Knox Valley Dr., where playground equipment was installed. An ongoing project has been involvement with conservation by planting trees, giving money for wildlife shelters and preserves. BWC actively adopted the road that fronts the Brentwood High School and "cleans the mile" to keep it litter free. In the recent past, BWC members have helped maintain plantings at Brentwood's Cool Spring House. BWC members have volunteered over the last several years to serve as docents for the Tour of Homes, sponsored by the Brentwood Historic Commission, which raises money for the city. Additionally, our members have volunteered their own gardens and served as docents in coordinating a garden tour to benefit the Brentwood Library. BWC members, networking many times with community boards they serve on, have developed and implemented programs to educate the public on a variety of issues, including (but not limited to) legislative, health related, safety, and the arts. Club members continue to be devoted to and involved with their community.
