The GFWC Education Department encourages members to create learning opportunities for themselves and their communities through volunteerism. It includes two programs.
The Education in the Community Program motivates members to support programs that urge lifelong education. From supporting local libraries to the pursuit of continued learning in the Epsilon Sigma Omicron (ESO), GFWC members encourage self-education and awareness through literature and continuing education. They also work to help students pursue higher education by providing numerous scholarships to deserving students.
Focus on Literacy Program focuses on getting children excited about reading, tutoring those children and adults in need of extra assistance, and promoting and participating in adult literacy programs. Members are important fixtures in the community, not only tutoring, but also offering new and exciting programs for kids.
We are beginning a new year of ESO. Keep reading and fill out the forms.
Please remember to save your Campbell Soup labels, General Mills box tops and your aluminum tabs. We did a super job last year and want to do even better this year. Joyce McFadden collects these at all general meetings.

Teacher
appreciation week is in the first week of May. We will be giving
each of the schools in Brentwood a gift certificate for one special
teacher. NEA celebrates National Teacher Day each year on Tuesday of
the first full week of May. The day celebrates the outstanding work
and lifelong dedication of teachers nationwide. National Teacher Day
came into being through the leadership and persistence of Eleanor Roosevelt.
In 1953, she persuaded the 81st congress to proclaim May 7 that year
as National Teacher Day.

S.H.I.N.E.On March 7th we did another S.H.I.N.E.. Jacqui Love has been the volunteer leader for this group. A special thank you goes out to her. "Awesome SHINE treat! SHINE treats are awesome!" All of the ways that the Brentwood High School students said thank you was a unique experience. We had a great time during lunch with them. Our sponsor teacher, Wes Adams, had everything set up for us and over 650 treats were given out that day. Thank you to Jacqui Love, Linda Orellana, Jane Davis, Diane Jones, Sherry Martin and Becky Pair for their contributions and help in making this project a success.

A Brentwood High School Student happily selects a S.H.I.N.E. award. SHINE rewards students whose grades are already high or whose grades have improved significantly by offering "treats". Facilitating the rewards are, from the left, Imelda Karlson, Linda Orellana, Jane Davis, and Jacqui Love. The Education Department wants to thank all of you who have contributed to the S.H.I.N.E. program. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Awards were given out on Thursday, November 8th at Brentwood High School. 600 treats were given out! |
BWC previously donated several computer dolls to the Brentwood High School Family Living Class, giving students a realistic view of child rearing.
Little things make a BIG difference in the things we do to help support the schools in Brentwood. Joyce McFadden is collecting your Campbell Soup labels, Box Tops for Education, and pull tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. It takes about 900 tabs to make one pound of aluminum. We're looking for a record number of tabs this year.If you need ESO forms to record your reading please let us know and we'll see that you get one. Keep up your reading and sharing your reports.
